Northtour - Return

Route day 19-1

Route day19-2

I slept well again. Than I took the way to direction Oslo and had to see that the whole traffic system on the E6 behind Lillehammer was one huge construction site. It was traffic jam without an end and a broke down lorry in the single track lane made it worse. After 1 hour I reached a roundabout and got away from this hell. The smaller country road had very less traffic. Which way I took from than I really can't put together en detail now.

Before I reached the border to Sweden I came back to the motorway. So my planned stop in Oslo was omitted.

This would be the worst day of my journey. Gastrointestinal problems hit me for hours. Fittingly to that it began to rain very heavy. Everything fitted together in a bad way. I decided to drive on passed Göteborg and looked for a night stay at Varberg. I did not like it theres. Independent of that everything offered was overpriced. I wanted a room with a shower.

Near Falkenberg I read of a cottage house settlement a few kilometers to the inner land belonging to a golf course. Fortunately the course was before opening what means it was farmed at that time. The houses were cleand up but without facilities. I came together with the landlord to take the own sleeping bag and towels and we agreed a suitable price. It might be as double expensive in season.

The data to day 19 (2018, May 28th):

Km-Stand (mileage): 54.987km, 620km (385 miles)
Refuel: 237km, 25.36L, 267NOK + 129SEK = 40.53€
Overnight stay: Golfbanan in Vinberg AB Falkenberg  600SEK = 58.39€
Eating, drinking:  140NOK + 125SEK =16.15€

Northtour - Return (2)

Route day 20-1

Route day 20-2

Once I awoke I was feeling well again and a force pushed me to drive home. I had chosen the ferry from Helsingborg to Helsingör. That was a crossing with nothing special to say.

Sure I could have shorten the way a big part if I had been taken another ferry. I don't know why I didn't do that.

In this video I crossed the chanel through from the Northsea to the Baltic sea (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal). The traffic rose on and on. At about  19:00 p. m. I came to Hamburg and only wanted to go on.

Fahrt in Hamburg

Meanwhilel I thought about spending another night here but I was neither tired nor annoyed about sitting and driving on and on. With several breakes to relax I reached home at midnight this day.

The data to day 19 (2018, May 28th):

Km-Stand (mileage): 56.110km, 1.123km (697 miles)  (!) driven, back at midnight
Refuel: 1.069km, 62.06L, 56.64€
Overnight stay: -
Eating, drinking: 19,27€
Ferry: Helsingborg - Helsingör 23.65€

Final

Here ends my report about my journey to the most north places of Europe. I  hope you liked it and had fun while reading and with the videos or pictures. Mainly I hope I could give ideas for an own trip. Planning is half the way and the things to think about are only few.

There are always in manageable distances gas stations, workshops and point to stay the nights. So a hurdle has been cleared. I wouldn't go there at season time because I didn't want to catch the mass traffic and to enjoy the beautiful ways with 'cruising'. And a canister like I took with me is not necessary.

You won't really need cash. It is very practicable to pay everything with banking card, credit card or online repective with your smartphone. The smallest sums of money are no problem. It is advisable to take a second card with you for the case of lost or damage. And naturally a credit card causes more costs than paying by banking card.

Last not least I bet you to apologize my English if it is too bad :-)

Statistics

At the end I do some statistics; the €-sums are nearly to the exchange rates and single sums are rounded up:

Driven distance: 9,012km (5,599 miles)
Refuel: ca. 447.90L (incl. start filling + 3L in a canister; one bill is lost, here I estimated the amount of 8L)
Average consumption on the complete distance: 4.97L/100km
Ca. 1,200km (745 miles) while driving through Germany on the motorways I made a speed of 120-130km/h (75 - 80 mph), the other roads and streets about 70 to 90km/h (43 - 55 mph) like what was allowes. These were the perfect speeds to enjoy the surrounding areas while driving.
Costs of gas: ca. 700.- €
Costs of utility materials: engine oil 20.78€

Food, eating, drinking: ca. 380.- €
Overnight stays: 586.- €
Herein are the unscheduled costs for hotels or other houses. If there were appropriate conditions it'd possible to save money. On the other side some overnight stays outdoors saved my account a bit.

Ferries/tunnel/bridges: 217.- €
Only the Atlantic tunnel and the brigde from Danmark to Sweden (Öresundbrücke) is to pay for motorbikers. Otherwise you don't have to expect further costs.
Entry: 38.-€
Souvenirs: 51.59€

Will I put all together this journey costed me round about 2,000.- €.

But there are some additional costs for spare parts because of the turn over in the storm at the North Cape (self mounting):
1 headlight (used): 30.- €

1 indicator at the back (used): 12.- €

There were more costs of the flat tyre:
Towin away and workshop: ca. 300.-€ (additional 300.- € payed by the insurance)

Another damage which I realized in the workshop in Loedingen was a broken arm in the towing box of the rear wheel. I took this part to specialist for welding work with aluminium. This kind of damage shouldn't happen anyway. But it was seen that this damage was not new. It must have been since the part has been produced. I think it might be a manufacturing defect. The repair was possible without dismounting all the spokes and I had to pay incl. putting on the tyre 70.-€.

Sure if you have done a long tour like this there has to be an intensive maintenance. Therefore I did:

  • renewing spark plugs erneuern
  • changing oil
  • changing oil filter
  • change of sealing ring in the gear box near the clutch pedal
  • dismouting of the front fort, changing oil, change of sealing rings
While controlling the construction plan I saw that from 1995 a cover plate was put on to protect against dirt. Costs: under 10.- € and I mounted this too.
  • varnishing of the front fork
  • renewing ot the back tyre
  • dismounting of the steering lock; the locking metal was bent and with it the keylock itself was bent and hooked . The complete part had to be dismounted and mounted again.
